Pakistan bus crash: At least 14 wedding guests killed after river plunge | World News

At least 14 people have been killed after a bus carrying wedding guests crashed into a river in Pakistan.

The bus was carrying around two dozen passengers. Searches continue for bodies and survivors.

There are differing reports about the number of people who have died, with some local officials saying 18 people had been confirmed dead after the crash into the Indus River in northern Pakistan.

It’s been reported the bus left the road at the Thalichi Bridge. A party of 27 people were heading to Chakwal, a city in the Punjab province, government spokesman Faizullah Faraq said.

At least nine people are thought to still be missing.

Mr Faraq added that so far only one woman had been found alive and was being treated in hospital.

The cause of the crash hasn’t been confirmed. Police are yet to take a statement from the survivor.

But Reuters reported that the driver is thought to have lost control of the vehicle at speed, according to local authorities.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari offered his condolences after the tragedy.

The president also encouraged rescuers to work quickly to find the remaining missing passengers.

Crashes on the roads are common in Pakistan due to poor infrastructure. In August, more than 30 people were killed and dozens injured in two separate bus crashes.
